Nigeria: Plateau Govt. to Partner With U.S. – University On ICT

The Plateau Government is to partner with the ICT University, Louisiana, U.S. to provide affordable online Information and Communication Technology courses.

Prof. Comfort Piwuna, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, made this known in Jos on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Piwuna said that the courses include certificates, bachelor’s degrees, master’s programmes and Ph D.

The commissioner said that the Plateau State University, Bokkos and the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin-Ladi, had been marked as pilot centres for the programme.

“The Plateau Government has agreed to provide the centres and the halls, while the American ICT university will provide the required facilities needed for the effective take-off of the programme.”

She said the partnership would provide additional platform for Plateau citizens to have access to ICT skills and be in tune with the technology-driven world of the 21st century.

Thiruvalluvar University to get Incubation and Technology Transfer Centre at Rs 30 lakh

Thiruvalluvar University has been identified as one among the nine universities in the State to receive financial support from the State government to establish an Incubation and Technology Transfer Centre. The centre would be established at an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh to promote transitional research and development activities. This was disclosed by its vice-chancellor Dr P Gunasekaran at the eighth Convocation held on Monday.

The State government also identified the University for setting up a research centre of excellence in Mathematics at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore, the V-C said. Dr Gunasekaran said soft skill development centres would be established in five of its affiliated colleges, namely Arignar Anna Government Arts college in Cheyyar, Muthurangam Government Arts College in Vellore, Government Thirumagal Mills College in Guidyattam, Thiru A Govidnasami Government Arts College in Tindivanam and Thiru Kolanjiappar Government Arts College in Virudhachalam, with a financial support of Rs 5 lakh to each of these colleges from the State.

Program to offer unique semester

Sick of cookie-cutter syllabi? The Flipped Semester is ready to serve Michigan
students who have a knack for the unconventional.

The Flipped Semester is a proposed program unique to the University that would allow students to take part in self-directed entrepreneurial projects while earning nine academic credits.

The program was proposed by a group of students within the Entrepreneurship Commission of the Central Student Government. Currently, they are trying to measure and build student interest for the program, while simultaneously working to gain approval from University administrators.

Lehigh University technical entrepreneurship master’s degree part of Bethlehem-area innovation cluster

When you have a great idea, there is no reason to wait.

That’s the motto at Lehigh University’s Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation—the home of its master’s degree in technical entrepreneurship program, which launched last spring. Though Lehigh has had roots in innovation before — social video hosting site and its founder Rob Sandie spun out there and became active in the Philly scene in 2009 before leaving the role — this program is far more inter-disciplinary, recognizing trends nationwide.

Along with the fresh feel of the program is something that distinguishes itself from most others—it accepts students with a bachelor’s degree of any kind.

“We’re a cross between engineering, business and arts and science,” said John Ochs, the director of the program and professor of mechanical engineering at the university based in Bethlehem, Pa. Less than 90 minutes from Center City, a growing Lehigh Valley technology community can help pipe talent to Philadelphia and create a broader ecosystem of innovation in the mega-region.
